MICHÈLE LONSDALE • SMITH ARTISTIC DIRECTOR & CO - FOUNDER

The Gracemoon Arts Company and Theatre in New York is the culmination of 25 years of dreaming. Dreaming about a way to tell a deeper truth as an artist and dreaming about a place to do that with anyone and everyone who loves acting and art and is as passionate and devoted about being an artist as she is.

Michèle has directed theatre and coached award winning actors for film, television, and the stage for over two decades. She has worked as an actor for more than 30 years in film, television and theatre.

Michèle founded the Gracemoon Arts Company with its ensemble of artists, as a creative home devoted to the making of public works. In 2023, she returned to New York, the birthplace of her acting training in the 80s, to create a home for art, and to add her voice to the global conversation.

I have always felt that a community of artists who were dedicated to the deepest human truths as a guiding principle of their work and their life, could change the world. That they could affect humanity in immeasurable ways. I don’t remember a time when I wasn't certain of this. I also know because I have experienced it throughout my life. The more I continue to search for truth, and the more I ask the difficult questions of myself, the more I expand the scope of my life and my work.

I believe if artists could be taught to do this through the art form they love so much, even if their concepts of love, were skewed by abuse, trauma, or neglect, they could help save not only their own lives but significantly impact and benefit the lives of others. It has taken 20-plus years to realize this dream of community, by focusing all my mentorship on the principle that love IS art and art IS love. These artists you’re meeting here, members of the Gracemoon Ensemble, have worked with me and with each other for many years through all kinds of challenges, to help support and uplift each other in their lives, their art, and in their careers.

I am proud to count myself among these 18 passionate and evolving artists who are now embarking on the biggest challenge of their lives — to put their practice into this Bushwick theatre, in an attempt to pass on what they have learned, and will continue to learn through the art of storytelling.
