THE COMPANY
Name
The two words ‘grace’ and ‘moon’ — symbolic metaphors which spoke to the major tenets of the Company’s practices and way of approaching the Art of Acting.
The word GRACE is inspired by an adage that Michèle, our founder and artistic director, uses often in teaching and coaching, to help actors understand that to approach a character at its deepest level, to know the character’s most unconscious motivations, the actor must assume they got lucky in the universal lottery. Because, given that character’s circumstance, “there but for the grace of the universe go I.” Meaning the actor could have easily been in that character’s life, and what then? Empathy: one of the primary tenets necessary to be a really good actor.
The word MOON speaks to nature and the unexplainable nature of the cosmos. A lot of characters in scripts are in an existential crisis about the meaning of life; those are the best and most universal stories. The ‘moon’ also speaks to surrendering to the things I cannot explain, and yet, I continue to look for meaning.
